Materials

Almost every piece in this range is the same two materials. That is worth being direct about, because "wood finish" on a listing means a printed decor layer, and a buyer who expected oak will be unhappy on day one for reasons that have nothing to do with quality.

The panel

MDF or particle board with a printed decor surface and a clear wear layer over it. Cut to size, edge-banded on all four sides.

• Good at: staying flat, taking a scratch better than a soft timber, costing a fraction of solid wood, arriving in one flat box.
• Bad at: standing water. A seam that stays wet swells, and swelling is permanent.
• Watch: the edge banding. Four sealed edges is what separates a panel that survives a spill from one that does not. Check the back edge on arrival, because it is the one factories skimp on and the one you never see again.

The frame

Square steel tube, welded at the joints, then powder-coated. Powder coat is a dry finish baked hard, so it chips rather than peels, and it touches up with a marker.

• Good at: rigidity in thin sections. This is the reason a C-arm can be slim and still hold a laptop.
• Bad at: humidity where the coat is already broken. A chip in a bathroom or a balcony will find rust.
• Watch: the welds at the C-bend, which take the load. They are visible on the inside face; a clean bead is the one to want.

Hardware and feet

Bolts into threaded inserts rather than screws into bare board. Inserts are what let a joint be taken apart and rebuilt without stripping. Adjustable plastic glides on most pieces; on carts, casters with a brake on two of the four.

Formaldehyde, plainly

Composite wood panels sold in the United States must meet the TSCA Title VI emission limits, the federal rule that adopted California's CARB Phase 2. That is a legal floor for the whole category, not a brand feature, and no seller gets to opt out of it. See the certification note for what the brand does and does not publish beyond that.
