Sofa and bed fit guide
Four measurements decide whether a small table is useful or annoying. None of them is the one most people take first.
The number people measure first is the width of the gap. It is the least important of the four. A C-shaped table lives or dies on clearance and height; a nightstand on depth. Take these in order and the returns problem disappears.
1. Clearance under the frame
Lie the tape on the floor and slide it under the sofa at the front edge, at the lowest point you can find. That is not the frame rail; it is usually a foot, a corner block or a fabric skirt. Whatever the smallest number is, that is your clearance.
- 4.5″ or more. A C-shaped base slides in comfortably. Shop the 16 C-shaped tables.
- 2.5″ to 4.5″. A low-profile base fits, but check the base plate thickness on the listing photo first.
- Under 2.5″. Nothing slides under. Put a slim side table beside the arm instead; it is the better answer, not the consolation prize.
2. Seat height
Floor to the top of the cushion, with the cushion compressed the way you actually sit on it, pressing it down with one hand while you measure. A tabletop an inch or two above that height puts a laptop at a neutral wrist angle. Two inches below it and you are reaching down into your own lap.
3. Depth of the reach
From the front edge of the seat to where you want the surface. For a C-table this is how far the arm has to cantilever; for a side table it is how far you lean. Most people are comfortable within about 14 inches without shifting their weight.
4. Doorways and the route
Flat-pack solves this for the delivery, but not for the day you move. A 28-inch-wide assembled cart does not turn a tight hallway corner. Worth ten seconds now.
